Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a staple SUV throughout the US. Resilient and reliable, you find them up and down the country. Unfortunately, so do car thieves. With 1099 stolen in 2022 in Michigan alone and 13,210 thefts nationwide in 2021, the popular 4×4 earns its place on this list.

Chevrolet Malibu

The Malibu is the first Chevrolet to make this list, but it isn’t the last. Still, the popular mid-size sedan accounted for 3,095 thefts across 14 US states and was the third most popular target in Indiana. A modest claim, perhaps, but it’s still an outsized number considering it’s only the 20th most popular used car in the country.

Chevrolet Tahoe

The Chevrolet Tahoe has been around since the mid-90s, and this heavyweight SUV is as popular as they come. With over 100,000 units sold annually, the Tahoe was always going to rank high on this list! Over 5,000 of them were stolen across California and Texas alone.

Dodge Ram Pickup

The first pickup truck to make the list but by no means the last, over 6,400 Rams were stolen in 2022. Despite being the third most popular pickup in the States, the Dodge seems to be a less attractive target than some of its four-wheel-drive cousins further down the list.

Kia Sportage

The Sportage is the best-selling Kia in the US, so it makes sense that this compact SUV is also one of the most stolen cars. Though it accounted for over 6,000 thefts in 2022, it wasn’t the most stolen car in any state. However, the Sportage holds the dubious honor of being the most stolen car in Puerto Rico.

Nissan Altima

Nissan’s mid-size sedan was the sixth most stolen car in 2021 and still ranks among the top 10 most stolen models in 23 states. There were 7,794 thefts across these states in 2022, down from 13,355 nationwide in the previous year. Most thefts are of the more recent models that feature a problematic keyless entry system.

Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat

This iconic muscle car is as infamous as it is rare. Production ceased in 2023, so everyone wants one of these bad boys, and they’re not easy to come by. The high value and rarity might explain why the SRT Hellcat is a whopping 60 times more likely to be stolen than the average car in the US.

Dodge Charger HEMI

Though not as sought after as the Hellcat, the Charger HEMI is still stolen almost 22 times more than the average car. Not that you can blame the thieves for being interested. 807 brake horsepower and the iconic Charger look are enough to turn any head.

Infiniti Q50

Far less popular and recognizable than its companions on this list, the Infiniti Q50 gets stolen at a rate of 8.78 times more than the average. It’s the only Infiniti car to make the list and by far the least common. The Q50 has, in fact, made the most stolen list every year since 2014, and nobody can quite figure out why!

Range Rover and Range Rover Sport

Thefts of Range Rovers across the pond in the UK rose by a whopping 47% from 2021 to 2022, and the States followed suit. Your new Range Rover or Range Rover Sport is 5 to 6 times more likely to be stolen than the average car. Thefts have been so common that these luxury cruisers have even plummeted in value.

Honda CR-V

Honda’s roaringly popular SUV has remained a staple of the American car scene since 1995. It’s also super reliable. Unfortunately, that has a downside. It means that many older CR-Vs with limited security features are roaming around. 13,832 were stolen in 2022, with 2001 being the most “popular” vintage.

GMC Sierra Pickup

Pickup number two on the list was stolen 16,622 times in 2022. Thieves love a pickup. There’s high demand for parts, and many older and less secure models are kicking about. GMC’s Sierra is no exception. It’s spared a higher rate of theft simply because there are fewer around.

Toyota Camry

With most cars on this list, older models tend to be more commonly stolen. Yet the prolific Toyota Camry bucks this trend. Its most stolen model is from 2021. 17,094 of them were stolen in 2022, while over 290,000 were sold.

Kia Optima

Kia and Hyundai owners, look away. The security flaw popularized by the infamous “Kia Boys” on TikTok has given three of the affected models prime spots on this list. The stylish mid-size Kia Optima saw 18,221 thefts in 2022, and the security issues led to Kia and Hyundai settling a $200 million lawsuit.

Hyundai Sonata 5

In hindsight, offering keyless entry on a car without an electronic immobilizer was a bold strategy. The Hyundai Sonata recently suffered the same fate as the above, and 21,707 of them were stolen in 2022. The most popular model was the 2013, which, you guessed it, featured keyless entry.

Honda Accord
