11 Things Nobody Tells You About Van Life

Van life is easy to romanticize. Especially if you’re sitting in a dreary cubicle browsing Instagram photos of crisp white campervan interiors, women drinking coffee in bed while staring dreamily at the red cliffs of The Grand Canyon, or tanned young men posing next to a tricked-out van with a surfboard.

Those things can happen when living the van life, but many things aren’t discussed. Nobody wants to post Instagram photos of how messy their van looks inside or how they feel after many days with no shower. Nobody wants to discuss the downsides because social media is about the upsides, right?

Van life comes with many positives, but there are many things nobody tells you. Here’s my rundown as someone who has lived in a Toyota Prius, a Chevy Astro van, and a Mercedes Sprinter van.

Inside van

#1 Van Life Is Dirty

I’m sure a small part of you understands deep down that living in a van has to be a dirty endeavor. But you might not realize just how dirty it can be. As we aren’t “campground people,” we typically park for free on land operated by the Bureau of Land Management or the National Forest Service.

This means we are camping in the dirt. We are driving down dusty dirt roads to find places to sleep. We are walking, hiking, biking, showering, and doing dishes in the dirt.

Our 1994 Chevy Astro van, which we lived out of for three years, was an ancient van with lots of places dirt crept in. A light coating of dust gathered on the windowsills, refrigerator, ledges, and even my pillow as we drove down dirt roads.

My hair felt gritty; dirt found its way under my fingernails, coated my feet, and caked itself in my nose. I hate feeling dirty, so this is one of my biggest challenges with van life.

Now that we have a newer 2021 Sprinter van conversion, dirt is less likely to find its way inside. Our sheets, pillows, and walls remain blissfully clean. Our larger van also offers an under-chassis 27-gallon water storage container, which we use for solar showers to wash the dust away.

There’s nothing better than falling asleep in my campervan with clean hair and a clean body. It makes all the difference in the world.

#2 Van Toilets Are Disgusting

It grosses me out when people tell me they need a bathroom in their campervan. Do you really want to store human waste a few feet from where you sleep and cook? For van life, the toilet options are limited. You can have a portable cassette toilet that you must carry and dump out in a public restroom.

Another choice is a composting toilet that separates human waste. The liquid goes into a container that needs to be emptied every couple of days, while the solid stuff “composts” in a bin along with a bulking agent such as coconut coir or wood chips.

The issue is that it doesn’t compost promptly, so you’re emptying a smelly mass of semi-composted excrement into a large hole you dug in the middle of nowhere or into a trash bag that must be thrown out.

Another option many van dwellers use is to go in a 5-gallon bucket lined with a plastic bag and cat litter, then throw the bag out.

Which of these options sounds best to you? None of them are amazing, so we opted out of having a toilet in our campervan. For us, it’s easier to find a public bathroom or dig a cathole in the middle of nowhere than deal with dumping and living in a small space with waste.

To each their own, but keep all these points in mind when you approach someone living the van life and ask, “Do you have a bathroom in there?” (yes, people ask us this all the time).

#3 Van Lifers Have a “Liquids Bottle”

Again, people who live in houses love to ask us about our bathroom habits. They don’t know that when van lifers opt not to carry around a toilet, they instead use a “liquids” bottle. Finding a public bathroom every time we go would be incredibly annoying. Instead, there are all types of plastic containers out there that work for #1.

I’ve used everything from a large vertical Costco container for dried mushrooms to an opaque white cat litter container. Other van lifers use everything from an almond milk plastic jug to a mixed nuts container. The ability to go in one’s van is an absolute necessity.

Tip #1: If you’re a woman, pick a bottle with a wide enough mouth.

Tip #2: Please hold your container tightly when using it. Do not drop your container. We speak from personal experience here.

Van Life Inside

#4 Showering Outside Can Suck (But Can Also Be Amazing)

I’ve spent much time boondocking (camping for free) on public lands in the desert outside Yuma, Arizona. This happens in fall and winter when daytime temperatures are pleasant, but nighttime temps get cold and windy. I’ve showered outside in many of these chilly conditions, hiding behind the van to stay out of the wind while standing beneath my solar shower.

I often don’t look forward to these shivery showers, but dumping hot water on myself while the Milky Way glistens in the inky black sky is a phenomenal experience, and I always feel better afterward.

#5 Sometimes, All I Want Is a House

There are times when I’m entirely over van living. This is when I feel dirty, cold, disorganized, or tired of planning my life on the fly. Everything is a little more challenging when living in a van. Doing dishes takes effort as we don’t have running water.

Showering means boiling water on the stove and dumping it into a solar shower bag. Going to the bathroom means leaving my cozy van in the cold morning and digging a 6-8” deep cathole (or walking to the campground bathroom).

I’ll start feeling the allure of a sticks-and-bricks existence—the endless hot water, the washer and dryer, a dishwasher, fridge, and oven. All the amenities that most people are used to become a luxury to me. I crave those things and dream about “house life,” but then I shower, do the dishes, and marvel that I get to live in nature, and those feelings of wanting a house go away.

#6 Van Life Is Like Hunting and Gathering

You’d be wrong if your mental image of van life is a carefree world where people always relax and pursue outdoor activities and hobbies. In contrast, van life has a lot of movement, research, and decision-making. Where are we going to get water? What are the nearest grocery stores?

Is there a good laundromat in town? Where are we going to camp tonight? Often, we talk about van life as “hunting and gathering,” as we seem to spend a lot of time searching for our basic needs. This can get tiresome, but it also keeps life interesting. It feels great to stay parked in one spot for many weeks.

#7 Living in a Van Can Get Lonely

Van life offers the option to travel where you want when you want. This is wonderful when you travel back to your hometown and hang out with friends and family. I love this aspect of van life, and I’ve spent way more time in my home state of Oregon than in the past.

However, once we leave that comfortable nest, we explore remote corners of nature without people. We only have each other to hang out with. This is wonderful as my partner Tom and I get along so well, but I also miss social activities such as ballroom dancing, happy hour with a friend, or family BBQs and holidays.

To combat loneliness, some van lifers travel as a caravan and go to meetup groups, which we haven’t tried yet.

#8 Being Immersed in Nature Changes Your Perspective

Now that I’ve spent more time in the great outdoors, I feel more connected to it than I do to civilization and humanity. I love being in tune with the hooting owls, the small desert fox that sniffs around our campsite, the birds, and even tarantulas.

I feel at one with the world around me and at peace. When I go back into large cities, it can feel like culture shock. There’s too much cement, glass, sounds, and vehicles. It’s sensory overload!

I also have a greater appreciation for nature and our planet, and I change my behavior so it has less environmental impact, such as eating more vegan foods.

#9 Weather Dictates Your Entire Life

When you live in a house, it’s hard to imagine the weather controlling your actions. But as van lifers, the weather is everything. If it’s too hot, van life is incredibly uncomfortable as most campervans don’t have an air conditioner.

We have to drive to a cooler climate, such as the coast or up a mountain. If the weather has a rainy forecast, we go to a warmer, drier place. As the northern states get chilly, we drive south to Southern California, Arizona, and Mexico.

Van lifers are like migratory animals—the weather is our life.

#10 Water Becomes a Precious Commodity

If you’re used to taking long, hot showers, that’s a no-go in van life. The most a campervan can carry is around 30 gallons of water; if you plan on camping off-grid for many days, you’ll have to make that water last.

We’ve developed funny habits like washing our hands simultaneously, one above the other, to save water. We take showers that are only 1-1.5 gallons each. And we only shower every other day. Washing dishes also requires very little water as we barely use any soap!

#11 Van Life Changes You Forever

Living in a van is an experience like no other. You’re stripped down to the basics: food, water, shelter. Material possessions are at the bare minimum. Simple pleasures become exciting: a hot shower, a hot springs, a delicious meal, or the Milky Way.

The rat race becomes a distant memory, and you’re more focused on living in the now. Van life also allows for introspection: Who are you? What do you want in life? What is your connection to the outside world? What does freedom look like to you?

Van life teaches resilience and adaptability. Many changes are associated with this lifestyle, which some people find jarring. You have to adapt quickly to new situations and problem-solve on the go.

If I ever lived in a house again, I would benefit greatly from my “van life” training. I’ll live minimally, in close connection with nature, with a greater respect for the environment.

Who knows if that will happen any time soon? I still love living in a van despite its hardships and struggles. Because most of the time, the freedom and adventure are downright amazing and something I’m not ready to give up.

Driving Tips When Renting a Car in a Foreign Country

Have you ever driven or pictured yourself driving in a foreign country? What does the image look like to you?

Sometimes, people simply forget that they are in a foreign country until they hear a siren blasting for them to stop on the road.

In some other instances, many people that want to drive in a country they are not familiar with usually get a little bit nervous…

… and well, if you are not too sure what the laws are, you will find yourself constantly looking over your shoulder to see if law enforcement officials are about to pull you over and give you a fine for an offense you did not even realize you committed.

Everyone knows ignorance is hardly an excuse with the law, so it’s a good thing that you are here because there are certain things you should know before driving in a foreign country, especially with a rented car.

Why Bother About Driving in a Foreign Country

You have to be concerned about driving in a foreign country even if you are the finest, smoothest and best law-abiding driver in your home country.

And the reasons are simple; one is that traffic laws are very different across countries.

Yes, general driving regulations do not change, however, driving laws, road conditions, and other acceptable driving behavioral norms differ per country, and you don’t want to disturb your entire traveling experience by having to deal with law enforcement.

For example, what side of the road to drive on, unfamiliar signs, pedestrian laws etc., differ according to country and you have to take note of them.

When renting a car, it is especially important to be more careful while driving.

This is because anything that happens affects both you and the car rental company whose services you are using, thereby creating issues for you with law enforcement and the company, which is a terrible experience to go through.

Beyond dealing with law enforcement or your rental company, another important reason why you should be careful is for the sake of safety.

Tourist accidents make up a large percentage of the death and accident rate in most foreign countries.

According to Bootsnall, almost half of all medical evacuations back to the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand are the result of a vehicle accident, and a medical evacuation can cost you upward of $75,000 if you don’t have adequate travel insurance.

These are the reasons why it is very important to know as much as you can about driving in a foreign country.

Tips for Driving in a Foreign Country

There are many things to take note of when driving in a foreign country. The list here is very comprehensive although not exhaustive.

Therefore, the important thing is that for whichever country you are traveling to, you should check and confirm if they have any additional policies or regulations that you have to take note of in addition to these listed tips.

This is to help you stay safe and avoid breaking the law. A good place to get all the information you need online is The DMV.

You can enter your specific location and get information relevant to you, but first, here are the things you must know before you start driving in a foreign country:

Hold your documents:

You absolutely do not want to be caught up in a situation where you cannot present a means of identification or prove that you are legally permitted to drive.

Make sure to always have all the required documents before stepping out in your car.

This includes your license, your international permit, your car rental documents and all other essentials.

Get auto insurance coverage:

If you are renting a car, this can be done for you through your rental company, but if you are not renting, it’s compulsory that you get insurance for your vehicle.

This is because the insurance coverage from your home country will not be usable.

When getting your insurance, make sure to ask for the right type of coverage from your insurance agent.

Do not take rented cars across the border without permission:

This is because in doing this, you could be breaching your agreement and it would cost you a whole lot with law enforcement and your car rental company.

Getting pulled over:

If you are pulled over on the road, for security reasons, you should confirm that they are law enforcement officials, and not criminals trying to take advantage of you, by asking for their ID.

It is imperative you stay very calm when talking to law enforcement so that you can get your issues resolved fast and smoothly.

Answer their questions, give them what they ask for and stay calm.

Traffic fines:

Countries charge their fines and receive payments for fines differently.

In some cases, you might get fined and have to sort the payment out yourself.

In some other cases, your fine will be sent to the company your car is rented from, and they may in turn charge you.

Whatever the case is, be certain of which applies in your exact location to avoid extra issues coming up.

Pedestrian laws:

It is very important to take note of the pedestrian laws of the country you are traveling to.

For example, some countries require you to stop for animals and some other laws which you might not have imagined.

Know your route:

Luckily, online maps are now available to help and reduce the risk of getting lost while driving, but if you do not have an internet compatible device or you have a dead battery, you might want to get hard-copy maps to use instead.

In doing this, you should also find out if there are special things required on your routes such as tolls, and the accepted payment method.

Know the number for emergency:

This is very important, and it matters irrespective of whether you are driving or otherwise.

Know the emergency number for the country you are in so that if you need any help, or feel danger, you can reach out fast and quickly get help.

Know the regulations:

Driving regulations are sometimes changed based on laws in some countries.

For example, the “give way” sign might require you to yield to somebody on your right instead of your left, or someone coming from a minor road, etc.

The traffic light regulations in some foreign countries are also different.

You also want to know if you are in a right-hand or left-hand country, so you know what side of the road to keep to.

Tthe US for example is a right-hand country. Speed limits and pedestrian laws also differ per country, and so much more.

Security:

You should also take time to research the security of the country you are in, know how safe their roads are so you can plan your route, your time, parking locations, etc., much better.

Irrespective of what you find, make sure you always keep your doors locked, watch your back before entering your vehicle and stay as security conscious as possible.

Drinking & driving:

This is basic, but if you are used to getting away with it in your home country, you might not want to try that in a foreign country because sometimes you could get caught even if you didn’t commit any offence.

Car seat laws:

Car seat laws, especially for children, vary and are taken very seriously. It is crucial that you know why car seats are required or accepted for your car in the country you are in.

Distraction laws:

These are laws to prevent distraction while driving. You have to know what is permitted or otherwise.

Can you call? Can you text? These are important regulations to take note of as well.

Requirements for Tourist Drivers

Once you are ready to rent a car and start driving in a foreign country, certain requirements will be demanded from you asides from having a valid driver’s license.

All the things listed in this section are items that once you have, you must always carry around with you wherever you go.

This article will focus primarily on the U.S although these requirements are generally the same.

  • International driving permit.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Rental and auto insurance documents.
  • Local emergency contact info.
  • Passport and travel visa (if you plan to cross any borders).

Conclusion

Going to a foreign country should be fun in all ramifications, including driving.

The last thing anyone wants is to get on the wrong side of the law.

To have a smooth driving experience in a foreign country, make sure you have all that is required.

Follow the regulations mentioned above and do as much research as possible to your specific location, and nothing can stop you from having all the fun and adventure you want.

Many used cars from various automotive segments have been notorious for their poor fuel economy over the years, ranging from luxury sedans to high-performance supercars.

These cars may offer remarkable performance, features, and exquisite designs, but at the cost of increased fuel consumption. In this guide, we will examine 15 used cars that are notorious for their low fuel efficiency.

Key Takeaways

  • Poor fuel efficiency is common in high-performance and luxury used cars
  • These 15 vehicles demonstrate increased fuel consumption despite their appealing features
  • Consider the trade-off between performance and fuel economy when shopping for a used car

Understanding Fuel Economy

The Role of EPA in Fuel Efficiency

The EPA plays a crucial role in regulating and improving fuel efficiency. They set standards, conduct fuel-efficiency tests, and ensure that automakers comply with the regulations.

Measuring Miles Per Gallon

  • Customizations: Custom options sometimes complicate rather than simplify.
  • Features: An excess of apps and services that you may never use.

Electronic Gadgetry

Gadgets

Your car’s dashboard may look like a spaceship’s control panel with its myriad of electronic gadgets.

  • Touchscreens
  • Wi-Fi hotspots
  • Gesture controls

They seem high-tech, but do they add real value to your driving experience? Many of these features can be more distracting than useful, pulling your attention away from the road. Plus, with the ubiquity of smartphones, many of your car’s electronic features can be redundant.

Rear-Seat Entertainment Systems

Your love for comfort might lead you to consider heated seats for your backseat passengers. But think about this: how often would those seats get used? Your car’s automatic headlights are there for convenience, but what if you can’t switch them off? They illuminate at dusk or in tunnels, sure, yet lack manual override in some models.

It might seem minor, but it takes away your control to decide when they should be used, which can be unnecessary during early evening or in well-lit areas. Plus, in scenarios where you want to keep a low profile, say at a drive-in theater, they could be quite the nuisance.

Motorized Seat Belts

In regions with frequent rain or cold weather, your car’s panoramic sunroof might not see much use. The benefits of natural light and an open-air feel are outweighed by practicality concerns, and considering the additional cost, you might prefer a solid roof that enhances insulation and reduces noise. Choose features that match your climate to get the most value out of your vehicle.

Wireless Charging Pads That Are Slow

Your car’s wireless charging pad might not keep up with the pace of your lifestyle. Imagine needing a quick power boost before an appointment, only to find that your charging pad is crawling along.

The allure of cable-free charging loses its sparkle when the charge rate is sluggish, especially compared to the standard plug-in chargers. Some pads even struggle to charge through thicker phone cases.

If your charging pad isn’t delivering at least 10W of power, you might find yourself waiting longer than you’d like. Keep in mind, the latest options promise faster charging speeds, like those outlined at CellularNews.

Screen Mirroring

Screen mirroring in cars allows you to display your smartphone’s content on the vehicle’s infotainment system. While convenient for accessing your apps, navigation, and music playlist, it often duplicates features already available in your car’s system, making it a somewhat superfluous add-on.

Fake Engine Noise

Your car’s roar might be a symphony, but sometimes what you hear is designed—it’s not purely mechanical. Many models from brands like BMW and Ford amplify or generate engine noise through speakers, giving the illusion of power without the actual performance.

In-car Fragrance Dispenser

You might find an in-car fragrance dispenser marketed as a luxury feature. While the idea of a personalized scent wafting through your vehicle sounds appealing, consider whether it’s practical.

The dispensers, like those found in a Mercedes-Benz, use proprietary cartridges that can be expensive to replace. Plus, they may not suit everyone’s tastes and could overpower your car if not carefully controlled.

Built-in Vacuum Cleaner

Your car’s cleanliness matters, but a built-in vacuum cleaner might not be your best friend. Let’s face it:

  • High Cost: Added expense during your initial purchase.
  • Maintenance: Regular cleaning and filter replacements.
  • Underpowered: Often lacks the suction power of standalone vacuums.

Lane-Departure Warning

You might find the lane-departure warning feature a bit nagging. When you drift from your lane, it sounds an alert. While it promotes safety, sometimes it’s overly sensitive on windy roads, resulting in unnecessary beeping that could distract rather than assist.

360-Degree Cameras

In your car, 360-degree cameras offer a panoramic view of your surroundings. While helpful, not all drivers find them necessary. Some reasons include:

  • Cost: They can add a significant amount to your vehicle’s price.
  • Complexity: For some, the system’s multiple views escalate the learning curve.
  • Redundancy: Your standard backup camera and mirrors might suffice.

Remember, not all features suit every driver’s needs.

Touch-sensitive Controls

Touch-sensitive controls in your car seem futuristic, but they can be tricky when driving. With no tactile feedback, finding the right spot to tap or swipe while keeping your eyes on the road is challenging. Buttons and knobs offer precision that touch-sensitive surfaces often lack.

Heated Steering Wheel

While a heated steering wheel might sound luxurious, consider your actual need for it. If you live in a warm climate, it’s an unnecessary feature, adding cost without benefits. Remember, gloves could be a simpler solution for colder days.

Automatic Trunk Opener

Your car may feature an automatic trunk opener, a button-activated convenience intended to make accessing the trunk easier. Yet, in practice, it may not always provide the expected utility or efficiency, especially when your hands are full.

Dynamic Cruise Control

Dynamic Cruise Control (DCC) sounds helpful, but it might disappoint you. In theory, it automatically adjusts your car’s speed to maintain a safe distance from traffic ahead. Yet, it may not work seamlessly in dense traffic or with sudden stops, which can be more annoying than useful.

Massage Seats

You might find cars with massage seats luxurious, yet when it comes to practicality, they’re often seen as superfluous. Despite their comfort, they add cost without enhancing the vehicle’s performance or safety.

Panoramic Sunroof

When considering a panoramic sunroof, they can introduce drawbacks:

  • Extra weight: Impacts fuel efficiency.
  • Glare: The sun may be bothersome.
  • Maintenance: Potential for costly repairs.
  • Reduced headroom: Which is less comfortable.

Built-in Navigation Systems

With your smartphone in hand, built-in navigation systems can seem redundant. They often come with costly updates and lack the real-time accuracy of apps like Google Maps or Waze. Plus, integrating with your current digital ecosystem isn’t always seamless.
